Grubhub almost had a commanding share of the food delivery market. Then the pandemic hit and DoorDash left Grubhub in the dust. In recent years DoorDash has run massively expensive ads during the Super Bowl. We don’t remember seeing a single ad for Grubhub.
Most of our Admins have done Grubhub and don’t have much positive to say about the experience. They do offer an hourly guarantee but only if you accept the vast majority of the offers they send, usually 90% or higher. It’s the same as DoorDash requiring you to accept most of the garbage offers just to maintain your rewards level. Remember, most “rewards” programs are just a way to sucker you into accepting garbage deliveries!
The only way to assess Grubhub is to actually try it. Most of us committed two or three weeks to doing Grubhub full time. The earnings just weren’t there but perhaps you live in a more lucrative market. We define a lucrative market as one in which customers know how to tip! One of our Admins makes $350-$500 per day doing DoorDash for 4-5 hours on Friday and Saturday nights. HOW? He delivers to a beach town with $10M+ mansions.
Grubhub uses the same non-transparent base pay model as just about every other gig. They don’t state your earnings per mile or per minute. You see one amount. Take it or leave it. Based on what other Grubhub drivers are sharing, it appears as if the average base pay is somewhere around $1.25 per mile but is much lower for higher mileage deliveries.
Grubhub drivers have express the concern that the company might not care about its customers. This is evidenced by the way Grubhub offers add-on deliveries. The following is an actual example of how Grubhub add-ons screw the customers. The driver picked up a pizza and was on the way to deliver it. Grubhub offers him a second delivery to pickup at a restaurant he had just passed. After picking up at the second restaurant, he realized Grubhub wanted him to deliver the food before delivering the pizza that had been sitting in his car for 15 minutes. On the way to the new delivery address, Grubhub offered him yet another delivery from the first restaurant where he picked up the pizza. At that point it was a 20-minute drive back to the restaurant! After picking up the third food order, Grubhub then changed the order of the deliveries. They wanted him to first deliver the pizza he just picked up, then deliver the food he picked up from the second restaurant, then finally the deliver the pizza he picked up almost an hour earlier! The driver called Grubhub support and was told the customers can’t rate the driver and that they would deal with customer complaints over the food being cold. The driver was told to “chill out” and just deliver in the order the app told him to.
The above true story brings us to one of the best features of Grubhub. No tip baiters! Customers can’t change the tip once you accept an order. While Grubhub is the only food delivery platform that recommends a 20% tip, some customers find the option to change it to zero. If there’s no tip, you’ll know it before you accept the offer. Once you accept the offer, tips cannot be changed. Tip baiters are the worst. That’s why we added the List of Tip Baiters and Non Tippers to our website!!!
HOW DO YOU BECOME A GRUBHUB DRIVER?
You can sign up to become a Grubhub driver on their website at Driver.Grubhub.com.
You can also download the Grubhub app directly from the App Store or Google Play and sign up directly in the app.
Once you’ve completed the application process you’ll have to wait for your background check. Grubhub and most other gig platforms use a third-party service called Checker to run the background checks. If you want to check on the progress of your background check, you can visit their website at Candidate.Checkr.com.
HOW MUCH CAN YOU EARN DOING GRUBHUB?
The Grubhub website states that you will receive Base Pay, a “contribution” from Grubhub, Tips, and Missions/Special Offers. The exact verbiage is:
Driver Pay
The amount you earn per delivery is a combination of your base pay and any applicable bonuses. Your base pay accounts for factors including mileage, delivery type, time spent delivering, and your local market.
Grubhub Contribution
Slow day? We’ve got you covered. This is us doing our part to make sure that you earn a minimum guaranteed rate for your local market when you toggle on for a scheduled block and meet Offer Commitment Rate criteria.
Tips
You keep 100% of your tips from completed deliveries.
Missions & Special Offers
Grubhub delivery partners can boost their pay by completing Missions (exciting ways to earn extra cash by reaching goals in a set amount of time*), and participating in fun sweepstakes.
